The 2012 season could not have started any worse for the New Orleans Saints, who are winless through the first four weeks of the season. Few fans with New Orleans Saints tickets, if any, could have expected QB Drew Brees and Co. to get off to this difficult of a start, and the defending NFC South champs face a long uphill battle to get back into playoff contention. The road does not get any easier in Week Five, as the AFC West leading San Diego Chargers visit the Mercedes Benz Superdome in what amounts to a must-win for the home team. Fortunately for the Saints, Brees is still at the helm, meaning the team has a chance every game it plays. Brees has a chance to make history against the Chargers, as a touchdown pass will break a tie with the legendary Johnny Unitas for most consecutive games with passing touchdown. Few NFL teams rely on their quarterback as much as the Saints, and Brees will have many opportunities to get to touchdown No. 48. One Charger that Brees must look out for is FS Eric Weddle, who is one of the best ball-hawking safeties in business.

The area New Orleans has to be most concerned with is the defensive side of the ball, as the Saints have given up the most yards in the league through four weeks. They are also finding it difficult to come up with impact plays on defense, as the unit only has six sacks and two interceptions. Not long ago, the Saints’ D was one of the most aggressive and opportunistic in the league under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, but it seems to have gotten a lot more passive with the loss of both Williams and MLB Jonathan Vilma. The Chargers offense has not been very dynamic this year, but QB Phillips Rivers has proven himself to be one of the best signal callers in the NFL, and he still has one of his favorite all-time targets in TE Antonio Gates. Linebacker Curtis Lofton and the new-look Saints’ D needs to slow down the Chargers enough to get Brees the ball as often as possible.
