With Washington coming off an embarrassing defeat to the Carolina Panthers in Week 9 and sporting a 3-6 record, few fans with Redskins tickets could have predicted that the team’s trajectory would change so dramatically over the second half of the season. One five-game winning streak later, and the ‘Skins sit at 8-6 overall, tied with the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys for the best record in the NFC East. Washington also owns the tiebreakers over both the Giants and the Cowboys, and can control their playoff destiny by simply winning out. The Redskins are playing their best football of the Mike Shanahan era, as the team is poised to earn their first trip to the postseason since 2007. In fact, if the Redskins claim the NFC East title, it will be their first division crown since 1999, one of the longest such droughts in the NFL.

Of course, much of this success can be attributed to the brilliant play of Robert Griffin III, who has continued to develop at an alarming rate. However, a minor knee injury knocked him out of the overtime win against the Ravens, and also sidelined him for the victory over the Browns this past week, forcing rookie backup Kirk Cousins into action. Cousins responded extremely well, first leading the game-tying drive against Baltimore, then coming back to pass for 329 yards and two touchdowns in the first start of his career in Cleveland. There is little doubt that RG3 is the most important player on the roster, but it is also clear that it has taken a total team effort for Washington to get to this point. Rookie RB Alfred Morris currently sits at third in the league in rushing, while the defense is responsible for one of the best turnover differentials in the NFC. Washington travel to Philadelphia to take on the last-place Eagles, and then return home for what could be a de facto playoff game against the Cowboys, so their road to the division title will not be easy. But with the momentum this squad now has, it would be foolish to bet against the Redskins.
